Southwark Hindu Centre was established in 1985 so that the Hindu community of South London, and their younger generation in particular, are able to maintain a link with their religion and culture. The Centre is incorporated as a charitable company and also registered as charity with the Charity Commission of England & Wales.

The Centre has a membership of over 100 Hindu families and individuals living in Southwark and the neighbouring bouroughs. Membership is open to all Hindus and people of other faiths are also welcome as associate members.

The Centre holds a regular monthly meeting on the second Sunday of the month at the Bells Garden Community Centre in Peckham, London SE15. The programme at these meetings, includes religious prayers, talks about Hindu religion and culture, poetry, music and songs and a free community dinner. The Centre also celebrates all major Hindu festivals such as Diwali (the festival of lights) Dussehra, Holi (the festival of colour) and Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna.

During the summer holidays, the Centre organises outdoor activities including day trips to places of interest.
