Frustrated Wannabe Desparate ? |
Southwark.TV began its series of monthly Screening & Discussion evenings with an event debating the link between hip hop, garage and gun crime. Is there a link or is it a media invention ? What is the local view ? Who are the local players ? It took place at the Acorn Tenants Hall on Acorn Estate in Peckham. The evening was filmed and a short clip of the debate is on the website. Attendance was significantly by local filmmakers: Damien Bent, Dan Fenton, Florian Viale and Megan Welford, Mark Aitken, Sarah Willmott, plus John Shepherd project director of Southwark Young People's Magazine Project, Adje Kouakou of Farassa - an organisation for Ivory Coast residents of Southwark, Joe Devine of Rainbow Radio in North London, local artist Rachel Clark ... Debate felt strongly that mainstream media was not helpful in this complex area and at the same time individuals must acknowledge personal responsibility every time they opt for a violent course of action and/or pick up a weapon. Many films were screened and a conviction emerged that locally we have the talent pool to create powerful media/videos/documentaries/short dramas and that this material could be delivered into schools and communities. Chris Haydon of Community TV Trust, who ran the evening, resolved to discuss with various people from the evening how funding might be drawn to this project and production of material be launched.
The October event was a special screening at the Peckham Multiplex (formerly the Peckham Premier Cinema) of the documentary "Jeremy Hardy versus The Israeli Army". The film's director, Leila Sansour, was present to take questions after the screening, along with Chris Dunham, a South London member of the International Solidarity Movement, who befriended Jeremy Hardy and features heavily in the film. Unbeknown to us the film played at the Prince Charles Theatre that night as well, but we still had a good turnout and the interesting discussion followed, some of which you can see on the Hardy Film Report page.
