SOUTHWARK HOUR
A TV series for the people of Southwark produced by Community TV Trust in 2005

"SOUTHWARK HOUR" A one-hour discussion based programme now in its second series.
The fifth edition was shown four times across Monday 23rd May and featured local Somali residents and a film about refugee pupils at Lilian Baylis Technology School. Community TV Trust announced plans to launch a three year project developing 'Somali.TV' along the lines of "Southwark.TV".
The fourth edition in the series was filmed in the offices of the Southwark Young People's Magazine Project. Guests were new editor Michael Stickland, graphics designer and local filmmaker Damien Bent, John Shepherd who runs the joint and Rotherhithe based filmmaker Gary Parker.
The third 'Southwark Hour' in a series of six was broadcast on Monday 21st March in the usual five time slots. See below for details.
We were hosted by The Hub in Peckham, which has applied for a 5 year community radio licence, and the show explored aspects of local media. Guests were Shane Carey of Eclectic Productions, who is leading the radio project; Kevin Quinn, joint editor of the Southwark News; Euan Hall from 'The Team' animation group, and Jenny Hall, who came all the way from Teesside to observe the range of local media activities being generated in Southwark.

The series is produced and hosted by Chris Haydon. Three camera operators -Ilaria Maré, Clare Johns and Chris Booth - shot the group discussions, and Paul Taylor made his usual insightful poetic commentaries and added further comments from his trombone. Volunteers are welcome to apply to work on future editions of Southwark Hour series. The second show was recorded in the Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell and featured From Boyhood To Manhood's Decima Francis, plus Antonio Ribeiro who runs the Theatre, and two representatives of the local Castle Arts and Castle Day Centre projects that support local mental health users.
The first edition of the series was filmed in a Camberwell cafe, Tadim. Guests included Tony Lynes of Southwark Pensioners Action Group, Anya Whitehead - Southwark Arts Officer, Rob Wray - Elefest creator and local trainer/filmmaker, and Dr Philip Dews from Myanmar Monthly Business Forum.
AUDIENCE FIGURES from COMMUNITY CHANNEL "According to latest DART (digital audience research tracker) figures the number of people watching the Community Channel has nearly doubled to almost one million.
The last DART survey for The Communtiy Channel - in September 2003 - showed that 21% of digital viewers (4.6million) were aware of the Communtiy Channel (ie they knew they received it) and 3% (564,000) claimed to have watched it.
The latest survey (June 2004) conducted after the Channel had gone 24 hours on Sky and Telewest and as it was being re-positioned on Sky 585, had risen to 35% awareness (11.5 million people) and 4% (965,000) claiming to have watched us. The number of digital viewers has risen by nearly 6m since last September.
We have over 9,000 direct respondents to Community Channel wia web, red button, email and phone each week.
