We went filming in St. Peter's Church in connection with a project done by Rob Wray with Kickstart participants. Rob had been filming there in November 2004 when building and painting was still going on, but when I arrived in January 2005 the work was complete and the effect was striking. The renovations have been very well executed. Sir John Soane deliberately designed churches with large windows for a lot of light, and the newly-painted walls really accentuate this feature (I happened to go on a sunny day, which helped of course).
The mark in the side of the piano was caused by a bomb dropping on church in World War 2. The bomb grazed the edge of the piano and carried on into the crypt, which was being used as an air-raid shelter. It exploded there killing over 65 people. Local legend has it that the souls of the victims are trapped inside the willow tree at the back of the church. A memorial to the dead hangs in the church. We hope to put up some video soon.
