Restoration of Holly House
Setting the scene...
Tottenham is one of the major settlements on the line of the Roman Road, Ermine Street. This later became the main road to Ware in Hertford and then the A10. Before 1700, the houses of Tottenham clustered around several small greens, both on and off Tottenhams High Road.
In fact, early maps of Tottenham show that the 18th century High Road was lined with a mixture of terraced houses, and larger detached mansions and villas standing in their own grounds.

Daniel Defoe wrote in 1720 how,
Newington, Tottenham and Edmonton stand all in a line to the North of the City; They seem to a traveller to be one continuous street especially Tottenham and Edmonton.
